Guanajuato city, Mexico, is the capital of the State of Guanajuato (GTO). It is one of the oldest colonial cities in Mexico, dating back to the discovery of the Veta Madre, the "mother load", a silver deposit that provided Europe with much of its silver in the sixteen century... yes a city that developed without the car for over 450 years! Where is Guanajuato? It is nestled in the Sierra de Guanajuato mountains just at the northern tip of the Bajio, the great central Mexican agricultural plain. The historical core of the city follows an old river bed (the river was diverted through a mountain to prevent flooding) with houses cascading up the mountainsides off streets (callejones) which are pedestrian only and often quite steep... stairs. It is the most European of all Mexican cities with a rich history of civic and church sponsored projects that reflect the wealth that this area has generated. While it is a very popular destination for Mexican travelers, it is still largely undiscovered by foreigners!Whether you are looking to spend a few weeks learning Spanish, work in a very energetic and creative environment, learn to cook Mexican, enjoy fine dining at a multitude of great resturants, sip cappuchinos from a sidewalk cafe, feel the timeless ep and flow of the city...
