Guanajuato, situated 4 hrs north of Mexico City in the State of Guanajuato,or GTO, is the original capital of Colonial Mexico and where, in 1548, the Spanish first found the "Veta Madre" silvermines, mines that would supply the world with much of its silver for a century. The cities 450 yr old historical core lies at 6500 ft above sea level and follows the old path of the Guanajuato River, with the cities densely packed and colorful homes rising up the slopes around it.
